The Region

The Haut Giffre Valley is probably one of the prettiest valleys in the French Alps. The villages within the valley are dated from the 17th century and consistently win the coveted "Ville Fleuris" award.

The valley remains very traditional with farming still the mainstay of the community. The valley is not well known outside of France. It has long been a favourite area with the French themselves both in the summer and winter.

Sixt fer a Cheval

Sixt Alpine Chalet is perfectly situated in the beautiful village of Sixt Fer à Cheval which is located at the head of the Giffre Valley. Sixt is small friendly and unspoilt French village. It has a number of shops including a small supermarket, boulangerie (which bakes excellent pastries!), specialist local produce shop and a couple of sports shops. There are also a number of bars and restaurants.

Sixt Fer à Cheval is a French national site, with a 12th century abbey and is the gateway to the vast natural reserve of the Cirque du fer à Cheval. The Cirque du fer à Cheval, is a sensational amphitheatre of mountains which form part of a remarkable glacial circle with several waterfalls. It is a place of exceptional natural beauty. At the summit of the Cirque, you reach the "Bout de Monde", meaning the "End of the World", completely surrounded by walls of rock, including Europe's highest sheer limestone face on Tenneverge.
